People have an internal circadian rhythm, a biological and behavioral processes routine that they follow over a 24-hour cycle. Despite this, there are several questions rises in our mind. What is the correct time to sleep? What is the healthiest sleep patterns for an individual’s overall health?

Monophasic Sleep Pattern

In today’s society, monophasic sleep is known as a “normal” sleeping pattern. This sleep pattern was considered as “the norm” during the industrial revolution’s.

Some people argue that the melatonin level of an individual is decreasing with the advent of electricity and increased exposure to light. This leads to an interrupted sleep-wake cycle of an individual and also impact sleep tining or durations of the individual.

Biphasic sleep

Those who have a biphasic sleep, they sleep for 5-6 hours at night and have a shorter period of sleep during the day. The shorter period of daytime sleep lasts for 30 minutes and acts as an energy booster. A siesta can last for 90 minutes.

Some people believe that biphasic sleep is a healthier sleep pattern than a monophasic one. And in some countries, biphasic sleep pattern is consider as the normal one.

Another form of biphasic sleep is segmented sleep. Segmented sleep has two sleep periods at night. They will sleep for 6-8 hours in two shifts during the night. Naps are small duration rest; it may be beneficial.

The benefits of naps are more; they include good learning ability, improved memory, good mood, and increased alertness.

Polyphasic sleep

Polyphasic sleep means resting 4 to 6 times during a day. These sleep combinations have the following categories:

Everyman: They sleep for around 3 hours, with approximately three 20-minute naps per day.

Uberman: They take only 3 hours of sleep per day in the form of six 30 minute naps.

Dymaxion:  They take only 2 hours of sleep per day, in the form of 30-minute naps every 6 hours.

The sleep requirements of an individual vary; some require eight solid hours of sleep for a healthy mind and physique functioning. Someone can take only 5 hours of sleep at night, and some nap at day time, still have a productive and healthy life. So we cannot predict the sleeping cycle of an individual. One should sleep as per his sleeping pattern to live a healthy life.
